Objective
Patterned topographies for their potential use as alignment layers for liquid crystals are proposed. Systematically designed nano- and micro surface patterns, as a valuable tool for studying not well-understood liquid crystal/surface interactions and their effective control, will be produced by unconventional patterning techniques. A comprehensive study of the alignment and electro-optical behavior of liquid crystals on such patterned surfaces is proposed. It is expected that the project will shed more light on liquid crystal/solid surface interface and address its role in the static and dynamic behaviour of confined liquid crystals. Also, generation of new concepts for device application of liquid crystals is expected.
