BELGRADE INITIATIVE FOR SPACE SCIENCE, INSTRUMENTATION AND MODELLING IN ASTROPHYSICS

Objective

Project BELISSIMA will exploit existing research capacities and EU links to establish the Astronomical Observatory of Belgrade (AOB) as the Balkans’ most dynamic and competitive centre for astronomical and space sciences. AOB has been the center of astronomical sciences for more than a century, now with 8 national research projects and 15 principal scientists with wide range of expertise in astrophysics, astrodynamics, space sciences and related fields. BELISSIMA will help achieving improved research capacity through A) recruiting 2 incoming experienced researchers from USA/Australia (negotiations in progress); B) purchase of 1.5m-class telescope to be installed on the existing Vidojevica observing site to ensure future cutting-edge research and training; C) 14 months of training visits by AOB staff to EU observatories (members of OPTICON as priority) and institutes to get skills with using new equipment and forge new research associations, as well as contribute to the dissemination of AOB results and improve presentational skills; D) organizing 1 international conference which will discuss the possibilities of the new telescope, and 2 regional meetings/workshops; E) expansion of its existing publishing and other promotional activities. Prospective AOB collaboration in both regional associations and European networks can achieve high degree of synergy for the future research proposals dealing with specific sub-fields, such as long-term and monitoring observational projects or large-scale numerical simulations of astrophysical and planetary processes. It will enormously benefit regional cooperation through partnership with Bulgarian Academy of Sciences Observatory at Rozhen and the analogous institutions in Hungary and Greece. This Action Plan will ensure AOB can deliver sustainable innovative science and expansive future research interactions at both regional and European levels.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
