Obiettivo CamCon aims to improve the control of Campylobacter in primary poultry production in various parts of Europe and thereby enable the production of “low-risk broilers”. The project places great emphasis on ensuring rapid and effective dissemination of scientific achievements to end-users, in particular the EU poultry industry. The consortium consists of 10 participants from seven countries representing various parts of Europe. The participating institutions include national diagnostic laboratories, institutions providing research and advisory services and universities. The scientists involved have a strong background in Campylobacter research and have published many original publications in the field. CamCon will be a 4-year project with a total budget of €4.17 million where the scientific work is organized in five Work Packages: • WP1 will study the epidemiology of Campylobacter in broilers in selected regions and climates of the EU and compare the sub-types found in chickens; • WP2 will investigate the effectiveness and efficacy of pre-harvest interventions; • WP3 will implement on-site, telecommunication-based, hands-free detection methods and develop quantitative screening methods; • WP4 will develop “second-generation” farm-to-fork contamination models for more precise quantitative risk assessments; and • WP5 will prepare guidelines, educational videos, Internet-based tools, and propose EU standards for producers, regulators and consumers, which are based on the results of the research carried out in the other Work Packages.
