The Researchers’ Night 2010 in Norway

Objectif

"The Researchers' Night coincides from the very start with the Norwegian Science Week, “Forskningsdagene” (this year 24th Sept– 3rd Oct 2010) of which it constitutes a particular momentum. The Research Council of Norway has successfully organised the Norwegian Researchers' Night project for the last five years, with events provided locally by subcontractors from the “Forskningsdagene” network selected after competition. This allows both events to benefit from synergies and complementarities, in particular regarding public awareness. The aim for this proposal is to continue the previous successes. “Forskningsdagene” is national, annual and well established. The events are well covered by media.

The activities will take place from north to south in a total of 22 events in 20 locations. They will reach broad target groups and maintain an enjoyable and attractive range of activities that includes Researchers’ Idol competition, Researchers’ cruise with the Coastal Express and ”hands-on” experiments – all featuring ”real research”. A European corner event will be set up in Bergen. Researchers will be “de-mystified"", their passion and fascination for research will be demonstrated in settings allowing direct involvement of the public with the researchers. Our objectives are to emphasize the importance of research, to increase the knowledge about researchers and their work, and involve the general public.

The awareness campaigns with advertisements and material distributed and media coverage in the RN-2009-NOR were found to reach an estimated 15.7 mill and 5.7 mill people, respectively. In our population of 4.7 mill people, this indicates that few people “escaped” the RN campaign. The events attracted 5380 people. The RN 2010 project will follow the same lines. As we include seven more activities in 2010 we expect the number of visitors to increase with about 20%. A public survey to measure the average public’s perception of researchers and research will be carried out"
