Objective
"Main idea: researchers and their work are the engine of progress in society but they are also normal people who have the same problems, expectations and hopes as everyone else. Their faces are like doors that lead you through to their professional and personal stories. The invitation to meet researchers is already suggested in the title of the “Facing Research” project, that the University of Trento is organizing for Researchers’ Night 2011.
Objectives: the aim of the event is to support the cohesion and the intellectual exchange with the non-academic community, during one Night, in the sign of edutainment. Among the main objectives there are: introducing the extraordinary normality of researchers, overcoming mistrust and prejudice; making citizens aware of how important it is to support research and bringing young people closer to careers in research.
Project: the idea was conceived after the positive experience of Researchers’ Night 2010: when the University of Trento promoted an experimental event, in an ideal connection with the European initiative. The involvement and enthusiasm of researchers and Phd students, as well as of a very interested audience, persuaded organizers to repeat the initiative in a better framed way, avoiding the mistakes made before, giving value to those aspects the public appreciated and setting the event in a more suitable place to meet with the city: the main square of Trento.
Development: the marquee set up in the square will host various initiatives (hands-on demonstrations, games, meetings with researchers, activities for children, the experiments and restaurant area, the Europe information area), all with some main aspects in common: active participation of visitors, direct interaction with researchers, edutainment approach, choice of up-to-date issues and a clear language. The bars around the square will become Research Cafés and the event will end during the night with a cabaret show dedicated to research."
