Reliable Powerdown for Industrial Drives

Project description

Predicting industrial failures before they happen

Unexpected failures in industrial machines can lead to costly downtimes, energy waste and even safety risks. Many of these failures originate from electrical and mechanical faults in power converters, which are essential for driving production equipment. Traditional fault-detection methods often react too late, leaving little time for preventive action. To address this challenge, industries need a reliable way to predict short-term failures before they occur. In this context, the EU-funded R-PODID project is developing an automated, cloud-free system for forecasting failures in electric drives, power modules and power devices that can be exploited in many different applications. Predicting faults up to 24 hours in advance will allow energy-saving shutdowns during idle times and enhance safety in power systems using advanced semiconductor technologies.

Objective

R-PODID (Reliable Powerdown for Industrial Drives) aims to develop an automated, cloudless, short-term fault-prediction for electric drives, power modules, and power devices, that can be integrated into power converters.
Thereby, electrical and mechanical faults of machines and of the power converters driving them will become predictable within a limited prediction horizon of 12-24h.
This will enable a power-saving shutdown of a larger number of production machines during idle times, because a looming failure during the next power-on cycle can be reliably foreseen.
It will also enable reliable mitigation of dangerous faults in applications using modern power-devices like silicon-carbide (SiC) and III/V-semiconductor devices like gallium-nitride (GaN).

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: https://op.europa.eu/en/web/eu-vocabularies/euroscivoc.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
