Project description
A boost for Europe’s space surveillance network
The growing number of satellites and space debris poses a significant challenge to space safety, making effective Space Surveillance and Tracking (SST) crucial for collision prevention. The EU aims to enhance its autonomy in SST, ensuring real-time monitoring and improved response capabilities. However, existing sensor networks have limitations in coverage, precision, and integration. Upgrading these capabilities is essential to safeguard critical space assets and infrastructure. In this context, the EU-funded HE_EUSST_SP_TOP4 project will improve optical and radar sensor networks. It will enhance geographical coverage, sensor performance, and data integration, while ensuring compliance with quality standards. Key assets across Europe and beyond, including radars and telescopes, will be upgraded to create a more robust and efficient SST system.
Objective
This Horizon Europe grant is to be understood within a wider context on EUSST, where other grants are being executed simultaneously with the common objective of improving the EU autonomy on Space Surveillance and Tracking.
In particular, this TOP focuses on:
- R&I activities are necessary in the sensor domain, both for radiofrequency (i.e. radars, etc.) and optical sensors (i.e. telescopes and innovative wide field optical sensors)..
- Contribution to a consolidated and efficient EUSST sensor function.
- Improve coverage area, geographical location and performance they can offer:
- Ensure an optimum evolution of the configuration and use of the EUSST sensors network
- Improved integration and connectivity of value added sensors, ensuring their compliance to the minimum quality requirements (including protocols, procedures, formats and calibration status).
Based on the architecture and added value analysis carried out by EUSST, the following assets will be upgraded:
- CZ_Shot (tracking telescope in Europe)
- ES_S3TSR (surveillance radar in Europe)
- FR_GRAVES (surveillance radar in Europe)
- FR_GRAVES_NG (surveillance radar in Europe)
- FR_TAROT (survey&tracking telescope)
- GR_Kryoneri2 (tracking telescope in Europe)
- GR_Baker_Nunn (survey telescope in Europe)
- PT_Radar (tracking radar in Europe)
- PT_SURV (survey telescope in Ocenania)

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
