Integration of Advanced Experiments, Computation and Data for Innovation in Freeze Casting and Advanced Porous Structures

Project description

Warming up to ice-template technology

Ice templating holds promise as a solution to reduce structural defects and enhance overall microstructural homogeneity of advanced porous materials. Unfortunately, this technology is still in its pilot stages, requiring further research and resources to overcome current challenges. The EU-funded ice-Link project aims to establish a research collaboration on ice templating of advanced porous materials, employing numerical/physical modelling, data system/sharing, and experiments. Through the application of innovative experimental techniques, the project intends to gain a deeper scientific understanding of ice-templating, porous materials and associated systems, enabling a significant advancement in ice template technology. The collaboration network will facilitate and support research and innovation efforts with expertise and equipment.

Objective

The proposed project aims to collaboratively research on ice-templating of advanced porous materials through modern data system/sharing, experiments and numerical/physical modelling. The project will establish systematic data of ice-templated porous materials and predictive modelling supported by machining learning for establishing detailed structures-properties relationship. The project will investigate the cooling process through experimental, Phased field modelling and molecular simulation for ice/emulsion structure growth/evolution process. The data and advanced modelling approach established will be used to develop porous systems with tunable porosities for advanced applications. One key area is to control porosity and distribution to achieve uniform porosities or gradient/hierarchical structures in functional ceramics (carbon, pizeoceramics, BCZY-GDC ceramics for fuel cells, membrane for hydrogen separation, etc.); Another area is to develop tunable pore size/shape and porosity in monoliths, beads, and fibres of plastics (e.g. for PLA scaffolding, etc.). The resulted advanced data system, intelligent modelling program, new materials and improved scientific understanding will contribute to the research and innovation capacity in Europe and the world on ice-templating, porous materials and associated systems with a long term economic and social impact. The network will serve as a pivoting platform for future data sharing, research and innovation, speeding up material or product development cycle through interdisciplinary research. It will enhance the R&I capacity of academic and industrial partners, sustain the effort in collectively challenging issue in this most active research area and jointly developing major break-through technologies. It will also equip researchers with modern research facilities, innovation skills and critical thinking capacity through integrated data system, facilities, dynamic collaboration with everlasting impact.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

CONSIGLIO NAZIONALE DELLE RICERCHE
Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
