Project description
Lighting the way for sustainable farming with advanced LEDs
Growing crops in controlled environments needs precise, efficient lighting to ensure healthy plant growth. However, current LED technology often lacks the flexibility and efficiency required for these systems. This limits agricultural productivity and increases energy costs. Finding better lighting solutions is essential for sustainable farming. With this in mind, the ERC-funded CERES project is addressing this challenge. It is testing protein-based red-emitting LEDs that perform well and have adjustable light spectra. Researchers are scaling up production, developing large-area filters and assembling LED arrays for use in crop-growing systems. By evaluating these in pre-industrial settings, CERES aims to revolutionise agricultural lighting and assess its market potential.
Objective
CERES aims at evaluating possible commercial applications of new protein-based down-converting red-emitting LED sources. Laboratory prototypes exhibit an extraordinary stability and efficiency as well as an easy-to-tune emission spectrum. This contrasts with the commercial low-energy emitting LED technology. CERES will focus on a validation phase including i) the optimization of the upscaling of protein production, the preparation of large-area protein-polymer color filters, and the assembly of red-emitting LED arrays and ii) the test in pre-industrial crop controlled environment agriculture growing boxes. This information will be paramount to realize a realistic market impact.
