Activating DAC Development Through Testing and Engineering

Project description

Automating connection of train cars for safer operations

Europe is moving towards fully digitalised freight train operations to enhance efficiency and connectivity. The EU-funded FP5-DACtiVate project will support this transformation, bringing together 21 European partners from across the railway industry, including operators, unions, SMEs and researchers, to cover the entire value chain. FP5-DACtiVate will focus on advancing digital automatic coupling (DAC) technology that will make connecting and operating freight trains faster and easier. Project activities will include testing DAC component interchangeability, expanding wagon onboard units and validating pre-deployment trains with hybrid couplers. FP5-DACtiVate should help ensure confidence in DAC implementation and will support the authorisation process, paving the way for Europe’s digital freight future.

Objective

FP5-DACtiVate project brings together 21 European partners from end-users, large industry, railway undertakings – operators and wagon keepers, unions, SMEs, and research, thus, covering the entire value chain. The FP5-DACtiVate project is set to advance the full digitalization of freight train operations in Europe, building on prior initiatives such as S2R's IP5, the EDDP, and EURail’s FP5-TRANS4M-R. The project aims to enable the pre-deployment of pilot trains with Digital Automatic Coupling (DAC) by executing required additional tests to the complementary project FP5-TRANS4M-R, thus establishing confidence before full implementation, while enabling DAC-authorization processes. The project aims to test the interchangeability of DAC components, expand the number of Wagon Onboard Units in line with FP5-TRANS4M-R's system architecture, and enable thorough validation of the pre-deployment trains by additional locomotives able to integrate hybrid couplers. Collaboration with FP5-TRANS4M-R is vital to align with its functional specifications and technical architecture, ensuring the project's contribution is significant and supports the related DAC authorization process.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
