NURturing transformative capacities, Innovation in NBS and Harmonious resilience in rural areas

Project description

Empowering rural resilience with nature-based solutions

Rural areas are critical for climate resilience and offer new opportunities for nature-based futures. Operating across four demo sites (Resilience Hubs – RHs) and five reapplication sites (Resilience Nodes – RNs), the EU-funded project NURISH co-develops and demonstrates innovative nature-based solutions, fosters digital innovation, including digital twins and immersive tools, and promotes knowledge transfer among rural communities. Through an integrated Regenerative Rural Resilience Framework (RRRF), NURISH strengthens local governance, skills and nature-based entrepreneurship to mitigate climate risks like water scarcity, land degradation and flooding. Aligned with the EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change and the EU Rural Vision, the project integrates ecosystem restoration, sustainable water and waste management and circular bioeconomy models, based on community engagement and cross-sector collaboration.

Objective

NURISH aims to enhance climate resilience and sustainable development in rural and small urban communities by implementing transformative nature-based, technological and circular economy solutions. It supports the EU’s long-term vision for stronger, connected, resilient, and prosperous rural areas by 2040, contributing to territorial cohesion, innovation, job creation, skills development, better infrastructure and sustainable agriculture.
The project will develop the Regenerative Rural Resilience Framework to help rural areas mitigate climate risks through nature-based solutions (NBS), fostering entrepreneurship and creating green jobs. Resilience Hubs (RHs) in Greece, Cyprus, Finland and the UK will demonstrate tailored NBS to address flooding, water scarcity and land degradation, while digital tools will support real-time monitoring and decision-making.
Communities in the demonstration and replication areas will actively participate in the EU Rural Pact, promoting rural perspectives, fostering collaboration and advancing nature restoration and conservation through NBS. By sharing knowledge and scaling solutions across rural regions, NURISH ensures its strategies are adaptable and replicable throughout Europe, contributing to the EU Green Deal, the Climate Adaptation Strategy and rural prosperity goals by 2040.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
