Objective
Just-Coast will demonstrate, replicate, and scale just, systemic climate change adaptation solutions to Europe's highly vulnerable coastal hotspots. Project objectives are to: (i) co-create place and people-centred pathways, prioritising vulnerable groups and social acceptance; (ii) design, test, and validate nature-based and hybrid solutions, alongside early-warning and digital-twin tools; (iii) foster climate-proof critical coastal infrastructure; (iv) deliver interoperable, FAIR data services and a user-centred Resilience Platform; and (v) unlock equitable, long-term finance uptake through business models and investor matchmaking. These objectives will be achieved by combining Communities of Practice, Public-Private-Civil Partnerships and Citizen Science methods with AI-enabled, site-based coastal Digital Twins, multi-hazard indicators and Early Warning Systems. Selected ecosystem-based solutions will undergo physical flume testing coupled to numerical models to calibrate and stress-test performance to 2100+. All tools and protocols are packaged in the Just-Coast Resilience Platform for reuse, upscaling and adaptation measures.
Demonstrations will span seven coastal hotspots (including low-lying and outermost high-risk coastal regions), with seven additional replication hotspots to prove transferability and scale.
The project directly addresses the call's scope by prioritising nature-based, socially accepted, governance, and digital solutions; embedding equity and maladaptation checks; and demonstrating TRL6-8 innovations across at least seven coastal authorities for upscaling. It integrates with projects MIP4Adapt and Climate-ADAPT, aligns monitoring to Mission KPIs, and leverages Copernicus Marine and the Coastal Thematic Hub. Outcomes include increased resilience and adaptation of regions, cities and local authorities to climate risks, with adaptive solutions made available for replication across Europe.
