European Flowers

Objective

The project proposes to realise a multimedia, multilingual (French, English, Spanish, German, Italian) programme for distribution on compact-interactive disc (CD-I). The disc is designed for the general public to popularise an awareness of European flora and to contribute to an understanding of the value of Europe's natural resources.

The contents of the final product will discuss the herbaceous angiosperms. In particular it will cover:

a key to the recognition of the most common continental species with particular reference to the species protected by Community, national and regional laws;
medicinal plants of Europe;
a profile of the main ecosystems of Europe (marshes, forests, cultivated land, etc)
the basic elements of morphology (flower, leaf, stem, root) and physiology (photosynthesis, absorption of nutritive substances, etc).

The prototype, using the necessary audio and video support, will contain a partial description of a natural environment, a partial key to the recognition of flowers and medicinal herbs, and a section of physiology or anatomy.

This production intends to establish a permanent consortium which, using the opportunity provided by the IMPACT 2 programme, can continue this type of activity, realising a series of multimedia titles using standard means oriented towards a wide consumer market.

The expressed aim of the partners involved in EUROFLOR is to form a series, entitled The Nature Collection of Europe, which would include another 5 titles. This aim is based on the type of competence already achieved by this consortium (ie access and ownership of the contents already formulated in part on other supporting material, experience in the elaboration of interactive multimedia systems of information, high distributive and commercialising potential for the CD-I in analogy with work already carried out in the traditional editorial field).
