Objective
The proposed project pretends to prove that the EGNOS coverage area could be extended (APV-I 99%) to cover all Eastern Europe. Moreover, a SBAS signal will be available in Poland, Romania and Ukraine to demonstrate on-ground (at user level) that in fact the steps to upgrade EGNOS to provide such a service are ready to be implemented in the EGNOS programme. Both facts – proving EGNOS extension capability and providing an EGNOS-like signal in countries where currently there is no SBAS signal – are a remarkable step for the EGNOS strategy of providing service for all Europe. To achieve this main objective, two tasks will be developed:
i. On the technical side, two fields of improvements will be evaluated: EGNOS extended coverage area with data processing improvements (without extra RIMS) on one side and with infrastructure improvements (addition of extra RIMS) on the other side.
ii. On the management side, the necessary studies done by local partners (Romania, Ukraine and Russia) and supervised by AENA (the Spanish Air traffic control service provider and a leader in navigation service provision) will be conducted to conclude on the necessary steps to be taken for RIMS implementation in the extended region and EGNOS service provision.
Even further and with the SDCM prime contractor as participant in the project, it is intended to study how EGNOS and SDCM could be interoperable, which constitute a second step beyond the state-of-the-art of the EGNOS service in the East. These studies will conclude in a demonstration for the overlapping EGNOS and SDCM area to make a practical interoperable exercise between both systems.
In parallel and to promote EDAS for probably the most-promising GNSS market in Russia, the EGNOS RIMS data through EDAS will be combined with SDCM stations data to provide a high-precision position service.
Finally, a study on the impact of Galileo in the scenario of EGNOS covering all Eastern Europe and EGNOS/SDCM interoperable will be conducted.
