Objective
The overall Project Concept is the stimulation, development and demonstration of innovative advanced operations, procedures and applications based on satellite navigation systems (GNSS). The project will focus on operations incorporating curved segments in the arrivals (based on Advanced RNP and RNP AR APCH navigation specifications). Special emphasis will be devoted to the analysis of curved arrivals with final transition to LPV approaches enabled by EGNOS. On the other hand and taking into account that GNSS systems not only provide accurate positioning, but also very precise timing, the project will also contribute to the development of enhanced GNSS time-based operations, which are considered a key concept in the future of aviation.
On a current scenario of small-paced implementation of new navigation concepts in European aviation (SESAR, EU framework program and Eurocontrol projects) and continuous stimulus for EGNOS adoption, this project aims at “filling the gap” in the state of the art of GNSS-based procedures and operations. It will interact, collaborate, complement and not overlap the current and coming activities carried out by these organizations, especially with the SJU.
A strong and experienced consortium has been set up with 10 partners from several European Member States. Users, airlines, airports, ANSPs and related entities are involved. Additionally, other stakeholders have shown high interest in the project. It is important to consider that any new concept in aviation must imply safety, operational and economic benefits to the users in order to achieve its final implementation in daily operations; all these activities are analysed within FilGAPP.
With a big commitment to exploit the results achieved in the project, FilGAPP is consistent with the evolving ICAO, Eurocontrol and SESAR JU strategies and aims at paving the way for the implementation of Advanced RNP, RNP AR APCH and APV operations based in EGNOS and Galileo.
