Project description
New method speeds up production of tailored nanoparticles for catalysis
New catalysts are crucial in accelerating the energy transition and powering a climate-neutral economy by 2050. Due to their tiny size, shape and high surface-to-volume ratio, nanoparticles are promising for use in catalysis. However, nanoparticle production rates and the ability to control their size, shape and composition are difficult and time consuming. Current sample preparation times with wet chemicals last several days, with success rates around 5-10 % per sample. The EU-funded ModCat project aims to change this by deploying a completely new technology that automates the production of 1-10 nm size-selected catalytic nanoparticles. The new technology will speed up the research process of finding the optimal catalytic material from months to days.
Objective
VSPARTICLE proposes a completely new technology to automate production of 1-10nm size-selected catalytic nanoparticles. This technology speeds up the research process of finding the optimal catalytic material from months, to days. The development of new and improved catalysts is necessary to rapidly develop cost-effective renewable energy technologies and reduce the carbon footprint. VSPARTICLE is a Dutch nanotechnology company that provides research and industry with the tools to manufacture nanoparticles and nanostructured materials. Since 2014, the company has been helping scientists and industry leaders to drastically reduce the development time of new materials and products, by making the process as easy as pushing a button. The new nanoparticle size-selection tool enables researchers to gain both a better fundamental understanding of the catalysis system, and a faster route towards next generation catalyst through novel Model Catalyst research.

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
