La demanda energética mundial no deja de aumentar y la Unión Europea ha respondido fijando unas metas ambiciosas para aumentar la proporción de energías renovables que emplea con respecto al total de la factura energética y al mismo tiempo reducir las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero. A partir de algas marinas y residuos biológicos se puede producir biogás, y ello puede suponer una aportación destacada de cara a alcanzar tales metas.
