Final Report - GEMS (Global and regional Earth-system monitoring using satellite and in-situ data)

Project ID: 516099
Funded under: FP6-AEROSPACE

This is the final report of the 'Global and regional Earth-system monitoring using satellite and in-situ data' (GEMS) project. Funded under the European's Community's Sixth Framework Programme, GEMS aimed to built an advanced system for monitoring and predicting atmospheric constituents like carbon dioxide, methane and aerosols.

The first introductory chapters provide general information about global and regional forecasting systems and the highly variable contribution of fires to air quality. At the heart of this report is a description of the four main focuses of the project: greenhouse gases, reactive gases, aerosols and air-quality forecasting.

The general approach followed for the assimilation and validation of the observational data from various sources is detailed. It goes on to summarise simulation results of state-of-the-art models used to address important science and policy making questions such as the uncertainty in global carbon fluxes and case studies. Brief concluding remarks complete the report.
