Final Report - HEALTHWARE (Standard and interoperable satellite solution to deploy Healthcare services over wide areas)

Project ID: 516171
Funded under: FP6-AEROSPACE

Abstract

This is the final publishable report of the EC-funded Healthware project which aimed to demonstrate that satellite communications can provide a unique added-value to the provision of telemedicine services. In particular, the use of digital video broadcasting - return channel via satellite (DVB-RCS), a two way satellite broadband technology promises undoubted benefits in terms of performance, flexibility as well as security.

Around the project's coordinator, Thales Alenia Space, an array of partners from the world of telecommunications and healthcare came together and developed pilot networks leveraging this technology. These telemedicine networks spreading across Europe offered access to e-health applications without any geographical barriers.

They made it possible for patients in rural areas to be treated while staying from home and allowed better coordination in cases of emergency. The report provides a brief overview of all the results from the implementation of these pilot networks and lastly, a set of the solutions to problems such as inequalities in accessing knowledge, training and health services.
