A band of dedicated researchers have demonstrated that slowing down and capturing fast-moving atoms shows considerable promise as the basis for a quantum computer. The EC-backed Microtrap project has made an important step towards this goal by developing state-of-the-art techniques for trapping ions - atoms or molecules that have either lost or gained electrons - on a chip.

This is the final report of the Microtrap project describing the researchers efforts to fabricate ion traps using existing manufacturing techniques from the chip-making industry. Specifically, a number of competing technologies were considered, including two-dimensional planar surface traps and three-dimensional silica-on-silicon traps.

Working on this basis, they were successful in building ion traps suitable for quantum information processing. What the Microtrap project has achieved and is described in this document bridges the gap between complex laboratory demonstrations and viable ion traps mounted on standard chip carriers.
