This is the final report of the PHAT project, which received funding under the Sixth Framework Programme to develop a low-cost and versatile way to build photonic crystals, and combine them in ways that bring optical transistors a step closer.

Photonic crystals are materials whose optical properties vary in a regular, repeating way on a scale of a few nanometres. The ideal photonic crystal can be designed to transmit light of one particular wavelength, and block all other wavelengths.

The PHAT project worked with complex structures whose optical properties vary in two and three dimensions. This report provides an extensive overview of the progress made towards building all-optical chips for computers and communication systems. The detailed list of the contractual deliverables is completed by a list of all the project's publications.
