Final Report - NATAL (Nano-Photonics Materials and Technologies for Multicolour High-Power Sources)

Project ID: 016769
Funded under: FP6-IST

Commercial interest in using laser technology for tiny projects to build into mobile devices such as laptop computers and mobile phones is growing. But so far their development has been technologically hindered by the 'green gap' - the lack of green laser sources. Now the gap has been closed, thanks to novel nanomaterials.

This is the final report of the EC-backed NATAL project which aimed to develop new laser technologies that would not only plug the 'green gap' but also make possible a host of applications requiring high brightness miniature lasers tuned to specific wavelengths. It provides a brief overview of the research work carried out to produce red, green and blue wavelengths and its main results.

Among the highlights of the project are vertical external-cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) operating directly in red light and frequency doubled infrared VCSELs that can emit in the sought-after green gap.
