Final Report - MOSEL (Monomode Surface Emitting Lasers)

This is the final activity report of the 'Monomode surface emitting laser' (MOSEL) project. Funded under the Sixth Framework Programme, MOSEL aimed to give a cutting-edge advantage to the European optical communications and laser industry.

Specifically, the cost and performance targets that communication networks have to meet necessitate mass fabrication of monolithic components at wafer-level. Within the context of the MOSEL project, new technologies were developed to achieve these targets.

This document describes its main results which include vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) of improved performance as compared to the standard edge emitting lasers (EELs) operating at wavelengths as short as 850 nm or as long as 1550 nm.

While MOSEL focused on a clearly defined objective, to design low cost and high performance components for optical communications networks, several of the technologies developed are generic. A brief overview of their potential applications concludes this document.
