Project Summary Reporting Period 1 - SecIGD (Secretariat of the Implementing Geological Disposal Technology Platform)

Project ID: 249396
Funded under: FP7-EURATOM-FISSION

Abstract

The goal of the support action SecIGD project is to implement a secretariat to support the Implementing of Geological Disposal of Radioactive Waste Technology Platform (IGD-TP) and to assist the IGD-TP to meet its vision that by 2025 the first geological disposal facilities for spent fuel, high-level waste, and other long-lived radioactive waste will be operating safely in Europe.

The Secretariat is part of the overall concept of implementing the IGD Technology Platform and it is responsible for providing a dedicated organisation contributing to the efficient management of the IGD-TP and its operations so that the mission and objectives of the IGD-TP are achieved and the benefits from the work of the IGD-TP are widely spread.

The SecIGD consortium consists of three waste management organisations from Finland (POSIVA), France (ANDRA) and Sweden (SKB), whose goal is to submit applications to construct geological disposal facilities within the next ten years and of the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) formally responsible for the RD&D programme needed for implementation of such a facility in Germany. These organisations share the common vision of the IGD-TP.

The objectives of the IGD-TP and the SecIGD are to define, prioritise, initiate and carry out European strategic initiatives that will facilitate the stepwise implementation of safe deep geological disposal of spent fuel, high-level waste, and other long-lived radioactive waste by addressing the remaining scientific, technical, and social and political challenges. The members and participants in the IGD-TP and the SecIGD project work together in various ways to implement joint activities to meet these remaining challenges. The target of the SecIGD project is to implement a Secretariat for the Implementing Geological Disposal of Radioactive Waste Technology Platform (IGD-TP) that assists the IGD-TP to achieve its goals and produce the anticipated benefits for Europe.
