Final Report - NANORAC (Nano robotic for assembly characterisation)

Abstract

Our ability to work in the invisible nano-world depends on specialised equipment. We can already produce incredible images at the nanoscale and move atoms 'like peas on a plate', but to create new nano-structured materials, components and products, advanced tools and instruments must be developed.

This was exactly the aim of the 'Nanorobotics for assembly and characterisation' (NANORAC) project. Funded with EUR 1.35 million under the European Commission's Sixth Framework Programme, NANORAC developed a robotic system that allows an untrained operator to interact with nano-scale objects.

This final report of the NANORAC project describes the core components of the system and their capabilities which range from direct control with force feedback to the used of haptics to guide the operator's hand towards the targeted carbon nanotubes with dimensions as small as 1µm.
