Final Report - PSY-NANO-SI (NANOSILICON-BASED PHOTOSYNTHESIS FOR CHEMICAL AND BIOMEDICAL APPLICATIONS)

Abstract

This is the final report for the project 'Nanosilicon-based photosynthesis for chemical and biomedical applications' (PSY-NANO-SI) that lasted 42 months. The project explored the possible applications of porous silicon particles containing luminescent Si nanocrystals (nano-Si particles, or nano-Si) as efficient generators of singlet molecular oxygen. It also investigated novel biologically tolerable and environmentally friendly materials and prototype systems that compete with existing photo-sensitizers in photochemical, biological and medical applications.

In the first section the brief report lists the contractors and relevant details, then discusses project objectives and state of the art in the field covered. A list of work packages and their titles is provided at the end, so are references. Subjects addressed in the work packages include synthesis of nano-Si, modification of properties, kinetics, photodynamic therapy of cancer and standardisation.
