Abstract

BIOMAGSENS was a European project within the Sixth Framework Programme (FP6) whose aim was to develop a new generation of ultra-sensitive magnetic sensors with very low noise, based on magnetic tunnel junctions for diagnosis and healthcare applications. These elements would be used to develop hybrid sensors able to detect fields in the scale of femtotesla for the magnetic imaging of the human body, mainly heart and brain. Moreover, the next generation of magnetic-based chips would be developed. Finally, a new approach for biochips based on fluctuating particles localised in space by dipolar reconstruction would be explored.

The principal objectives of the project were the following:
- Develop optimised micron-sized Tunnel magnetoresistant (TMR) sensors;
- Apply TMR sensors to femtotesla hybrid sensors;
- Explore an advanced magnetic detection for biochip applications.
