Abstract

MICROCON was a European funded project within the Sixth Framework Programme (FP6) whose ultimate aim was to develop an economic and ecological cut of the raw material costs of cementitious products by the development of a microfiller-based composite for the concrete industry while at the same time provide an economic and ecological improvement in the technical properties of cementitious products.

The microstructure of concrete and mortars has a great impact on the properties of fresh and hardened composites which could help optimising the microstructure of cementitious products and reducing the need for high cement and admixture amounts.

The optimised microcomposite is a potential commercial product for the manufacture of high-performance mortars and concretes such as ready mixed concretes, precast products including Self-compacting concrete (SCC) and dry premix products and has the potential of improving the competitiveness of companies by reducing their raw material costs and increasing their turnover either as end-users or as producers of microfiller compositer or both.
