Final Report - STEMACEL (Development of an innovative iron based cellular material - new manufacturing routes for porous structures)

STEMACEL was a European funded project within the Sixth Framework Programme (FP6) whose ultimate aim was to develop iron and steel-based cellular materials.

The principal objectives of the project were to:
- further develop the process of making steel and iron foams according to two technologies, namely the powder-metallurgical and the melt-foaming technology;
- adapt these processes according to the products defined by the end-users involved;
- provide the potential industrial manufacturing of these products with the know-how to establish these technologies in their companies;
- show the feasibility of these technologies through the manufacturing of demonstrators.

Samples, shaped samples and industrial demonstrators were casted. One demonstrator was a 100 mm x 100 mm x 40 mm cast product whose density varied from 5.3 to 6.4 gr/cm3. The structural characterisation was performed by using micrographic examination and X-ray tomography. Two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) quantitative image analyses had been carried out to obtain information about the pores (size, distribution and morphology). Compression tests had been achieved on the demonstrators, and the results were promising.
