Final Report - DESOL (Low cost low energy technology to desalinate water into potable water)

Project ID: 17928
Funded under: FP6-SME

This is the final report of the 'Low cost low energy technology to desalinate water to potable water' (DESOL) project. The project was funded under the European's Community's Sixth Framework Programme and aimed to develop a low-cost solar thermal water desalination process. The technology was based on the application of a vacuum distillation process, which allowed the usage of low temperatures and resulted into high efficiency in terms of consumed energy.

The report covers various aspects of the project, including the definition of the potable water supply problem, the objectives of the project, experiments, innovations compared to current practices and its possible market applications. It has been evaluated by a market survey that the DESOL technology has a high potential to be used for decentralised water production in small and medium sized facilities.
