Abstract

This is the final report of the NEWTON project. Funded under the European Community's Sixth Framework Programme, NEWTON aimed to develop three-dimensional (3D) photonic crystals (PhCs) with the use of adapted nano-materials.

Although a variety of technological approaches for the fabrication of 3D PhCs have been proposed and demonstrated in the past, in 2006, when the project started, a cost effective technology for their industrial production did not exist.

The first introductory sections of the report provide general information about the challenges faced by researchers in the creation of defined defects in the volume of 3D PhCs, which are necessary to fully exploit the advantages offered.

A description of the work performed is followed by the main results of the project which include the combination of a 3D PhC template and 3D defect inscribing, a viable technology for future industrial production of 3D PhCs.
