Final Report - BIODIAGNOSTICS (Biological diagnostic tools using microsystems and supersensitive magnetic detection)

Abstract

This is the executive summary of the BIODIAGNOSTICS project. Funded under the European Community's Sixth Framework Programme, BIODIAGNOSTICS aimed to develop new medical diagnostic tools based on the most sensitive detector technologies available today.

A common denominator for the technologies is reading out the biological state in the magnetic domain. This can be accomplished using both magnetic nanoparticles as substrates or tags for biological reactions and reading out the atomic nuclear spin.

The report benchmarked a number of technologies against one another with a model system in order to determine the advantages and disadvantages. To validate the concept(s), real diagnostic test were conducted using in vitro detection, further to the validation, neuroimaging and instrumentation for diagnosis of neurological diseases investigated in vivo.
