Final Report - GENDERBASIC (Promoting the integration of the gender dimension in basic research in ERA/FP7)

Project ID: 16630
Funded under: FP6-SOCIETY

This is the final report of the GENDERBASIC project. Funded under the European Community's Sixth Framework Programme, GENDERBASIC investigated the effect of gender on biomedical and health research, particularly in response to treatment. The EU addressed the problem by developing gender action plans for projects funded under the research, technology and development (RTD) Framework Programmes. The GENDERBASIC project produced a set of practical tools, examples and best practice recommendations that enabled scientists to incorporate sex and gender differences into their research more effectively.

The report outlines a number of recommendations, such as research studies and clinical trials should include both men and women as subjects. If this is not the case, researchers should explain why one sex has been left out. In addition, results should be disaggregated by sex. The effect on gender should also be considered by those conducting research on animals or on tissue samples taken from humans. It is also recommended that funding agencies and the editorial boards of scientific journals take into consideration the impact of sex and gender differences on research.
