Final Report - ENVIROPHYTE (Improvement of the cost effectiveness of marine land based aquaculture facilities through use of Constructed Wetlands with Salicornia …)

Project ID: 32167
Funded under: FP6-SME

Abstract

The necessity for treatment of fisheries effluents prior to their discard imposes an important cost in fish farms' operation. The ENVIROPHYTE project, funded under the European Community's Sixth Framework Programme, aimed to develop a low cost, simple to operate alternative to conventional treatment through the use of constructed wetlands (CWs) planted with salicornia halophytes which converted wastewater into marketable plant biomass.

This final activity report describes the project objectives and the methodologies employed for their achievement. Focus is given on the investigated options for increased productivity and additional salicornia uses. Moreover, the project achievements are compared to the state of the art. Finally, the anticipated impact on the industry and the potential for technology exploitation are presented.
