Final Report - ABIOS (An innovative technology ... to strongly reduce the microbial activity of the air inside the store rooms of cultural heritage conservation institutes)

Funded under: FP6-SME

Abstract

Cultural heritage objects within institutions are often damaged due to the microbial activity of the atmospheric air. Conventional fumigation techniques utilise toxic gases, harmful for human health, air quality and historic objects. The EU-funded A-BIOS project developed an innovative technology based on ultra-violet radiation to reduce air biological activity while eliminating the current health and pollution risks.

This final report summarises the project main objectives and provides an overview of the technology incorporated in the device. Moreover, the characteristics of the developed prototypes are presented. The document also stresses out the outcomes of the performed tests, both in the laboratory and within institutions. Finally, it contains information regarding knowledge dissemination and undertaken actions towards the equipment commercial exploitation.
