Final Report - ATHON (Assessing the Toxicity and Hazard of Non-dioxin-like PCBs present in food)

Project ID: 22923
Funded under: FP6-FOOD

Abstract

ATHON was started in April 2006 and addressed the question whether health problems in humans may occur through exposure to NDL-PCBs via common food items. Results generated in ATHON will be of importance to regulatory authorities within the EU in their work to protect the public health and improve the quality of life of European citizens. The overall aims of ATHON have been to provide missing critical health hazard information, to clarify biological mechanisms underlying the various types of toxicity of NDL PCBs and to evaluate these data from a regulatory toxicology point of view.

Their final report puts together the major milestones the project achieved, in particular, studies in ATHON have clearly shown that NDL PCBs have endocrine system modulating properties with effects on several hormonal systems including the thyroid, steroid and retinoid systems. Several neurotoxicity modes of action influencing cognitive impairment and motor disorders have been confirmed both in vivo and in vitro.
