Final Report - SEFA (Sound Engineering For Aircraft)

Project ID: 502865
Funded under: FP6-AEROSPACE

Abstract

This is the final summary report of the SEFA project, which used Sound Engineering to define optimum aircraft community noise 'shapes' (characteristics to design target sounds). In order to be able to perform a proper sound design for noise from overflying aircraft, it was necessary first to record typical data, so a sample of sounds from 238 overflying aircraft (arrival and takeoff) was recorded at three different airports in Europe (in Germany and in the United Kingdom) using a microphone array in combination with a binaural microphone technique.

The report is a summary about the project's background, its objectives and methodologies used. It also presents the lessons learnt, the tools used and assesses the project's impact on aircraft noise reduction technologies.
