New report highlights the research and development (R&D) potential of the enlarged European Union

Funded under: FP7-REGPOT

This is a report containing several key recommendations for the realisation of the full research potential of the enlarged European Union which has been prepared by an expert group established as part of the Seventh Framework Programme's (FP7).

Since November 2010, the Expert Group on Research Potential Project Portfolio, made up of leading figures from academia and industry, has been analysing how the 'Research Potential' Activity should evolve towards the next common strategic framework for research and innovation.

The 'Research Potential' Activity is a part of the FP7 'Capacities' Specific Programme and aimed to reinforce excellent research institutions located in the Convergence and Outermost Regions of the European Union and permit their emergence in European Research Area.

With the key word being 'synergy', the taskforce set out to explore the impact of the 86 'Research Potential' projects funded during the period from 2007 - 2010 on the beneficiary's long-term competitiveness as well as how R&D can be enhanced in the future.

This report outlines the main findings and summarises recommendations of the Expert Group to ensure that the regional aspect of research remains at the top of the European Union policy agenda, a feature shared with another report released recently, 'Final Report of the Synergies Expert Group'.
