Final Report - KARTRAF (Synaptic trafficking of Kainate receptors in Hippocampal CA3 pyramidal cells in vivo)

Abstract

The proper function of neurotransmitters receptors is highly dependent on their precise sub-cellular localisation in neurons. The molecular and cellular mechanisms that govern the synaptic localisation of glutamate receptors both depend on the molecular structure of receptors and on interactions with cytoplasmic and extra-cellular proteins. These mechanisms have been widely studied using a variety of techniques applied to non-neuronal cells and to dissociated neurons in cultures.

As outlined in the report, by means of a multidisciplinary approach study the project was able to discover the molecular mechanisms governing the proper targeting of KAR at MF-CA3 synapses as well as discover and characterise a novel form of synaptic plasticity. A similar multidisciplinary approach can be applied to the study of other synapses and receptors in the brain, contributing to the precise understanding of physiological and patophysiological processes.
