Final Report - STRESOIL (In situ stimulation and remediation of contaminated fractured soils)

Project ID: 004017
Funded under: FP6-SUSTDEV

Abstract

Remediation of contaminated sites is an environmental priority, due to the impacts of soil pollution. Fuel soil contamination in particular poses the most significant environmental threats. Nevertheless, the relevant framework remains often insufficient, while the soil structure impedes the application of conventional techniques.

The EU-funded STRESOIL project aimed to develop scientifically supported criteria for the selection of effective stimulation and remediation strategies in order to rehabilitate the unsaturated zone of fractured, low permeability soils in case of contamination with nonaqueous phase liquids.

This final activity report provides an overview of the project scientific background and underlines its principal objectives. The undertaken activities are also summarised. The document focuses on the elaborated cost benefit and efficiency analyses. Finally, the principal project conclusions are presented.
