Final Report - FURIM (Further Improvement and System Integration of High Temperature Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells)

Project ID: 502782
Funded under: FP6-SUSTDEV

This is the final report of the FURIM project, which focused on the development of new improved membrane materials. The entire concept of PEMFC at elevated temperature depends to a large extent on the membrane. Two main ways to replace water have been suggested. Either the sulphonic acid side chains must be replaced with something more flexible or water (the proton shuttle) must be replaced with something with a lower vapour pressure. To date the latter approach has been most successful, in particular exemplified with the PBI / phosphoric acid system.

The report begins with a summary on the project's motivation and objectives. It presents the project's structure into work blocks and work packages and explains in detail the experiments conducted and the results obtained. It concludes with a comparative table about the initial goals and the degree to which each was achieved.
