Final Report - STEMSTROKE (Towards a stem cell therapy for stroke)

Project ID: 37526
Funded under: FP6-LIFESCIHEALTH

Abstract

Stroke is a major cause of long-term disability in humans, but effective treatments are lacking. The consortium comprised of five highly qualified academic research teams and one small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) which, together with excellent clinicians in the stroke field, performed innovative research leading to the first preclinical protocol for application of stem cell therapy in stroke patients.

As outlined in their final report STEMSTROKE tried to unravel mechanisms regulating self-repair after stroke through formation of new neurons from the adult brain's own neural stem cell. More specifically, through the collaboration and subcontract with Swedish Institute of Health Economy, the consortium produced the unique health economy model for stem cell therapy in stroke patients.
