Final Report - CHIZAP (Community- and health facility-based intervention with zinc as adjuvant therapy for pneumonia to enhance child health and nutrition)

Project ID: 3740
Funded under: FP6-INCO

Abstract

Zinc deficiency is a major public health problem in developing counties. Poor zinc status is associated with stunted growth and reduced resistance to infections. Zinc is crucial for cellular division and for the maintenance of organs with cells with a rapid turnover, including epithelial cells. Clinical trials in children in developing countries have demonstrated improved growth and reduced prevalence of diarrhoea and respiratory tract infections following zinc supplementation.

The CHIZAP project assessed the efficacy of oral zinc given during pneumonia in hospitalised and in non-hospitalised children 2 to 35 months of age and during severe bacterial illness in children less than 4 months of age on the severity of the enrolment episode and on subsequent morbidity and nutritional status for six months. Their final report includes images and covers the trials and concerns raised during the course of the project.
