Final Report - SAFE-RAIL (Development of an Innovative Ground Penetrating Radar System for Fast and Efficient Monitoring of Rail Track Substructure Conditions)

Project ID: 506218
Funded under: FP6-SUSTDEV

Abstract

This is the final report of the project SAFE-RAIL. SAFE-RAIL aimed at the development of an innovative Ground penetrating radar (GPR) system for efficient, cost-effective, fast and safe rail track substructure conditions monitoring. The report begins with some background on European transport policies and practices concerning rail transport and then explains the project's objectives as related to the challenges in the area of rail track condition assessment. It later provides information on the GPR techniques and the related issues to be resolved, before explaining how SAFE-RAIL planned to address them. The project's methodology and system architecture are explained and also the prototype's characteristics and the results obtained after the demonstration and testing phase. There are finally conclusions from the project and recommendations for future research.
