Final Report - NAPILIS (Nanocomposites for Piston/Liner Systems)

Project ID: 505622
Funded under: FP6-NMP

Abstract

This is the final report of the NAPILIS project, which aimed to develop self-lubricating metal and ceramic matrix nanocomposites for piston / liner systems using and refining the wide set of tools of modern surface engineering and engine simulation, in order to achieve significant improvements in fuel economy of modern diesel vehicles through a considerable reduction of engine friction.

The report starts with an overview of the project's objectives and background in metal and ceramic nanocomposites and presents the main idea behind the solutions to be tested. It later goes into detail about the work performed, the materials tested, the experiments conducted and their results, under the scope of each work package of the project. Finally, there is a summary of exploitable results and potential impact in the industry.
