Final Report - JOITEC (Lead-free joining for microelectronics and microsystem technology devices)

Project ID: 5770
Funded under: FP6-SME

This is the final report of the JOITEC project, whose aim was to establish a new technology, the so-called laser spot welding process which will provide an environmentally friendly joining solution for the electronic and microsystem technology industry and will help meet the European guidelines with regard to the ban of lead-based materials.

The document begins with an overview of project's objectives, the reasoning behind the development of new lead-free soldering processes, and its achievements. The latest include the development of a continuous wave laser with adapted wavelength, a prototype laser spot welding machine as well as the design of Printed board circuits (PCBs) to test and optimise the laser spot welding process.
