Final Report - BIO-SHELTER (A novel, innovative and sustainable technique for the manufacture of biodegradable tree shelters with a known life)

Project ID: 513116
Funded under: FP6-SME

Abstract

This is the final report for the BIO-SHELTER project, which received funding under the European Commission's Sixth Framework Programme (FP6). Its main aim was to develop a biodegradable tree protector using a combination of natural fibres and a tuneable polymer matrix to protect young trees and samplings in their early stages from being attacked by insects or animals.

The report begins with stating some issues regarding the most common problems that young trees face after afforestation and how a tree protector would prove to be effective in this case. It then covers the main aim of the project, as well as its technical, economic and societal objectives. The two main areas of focus, namely the development of material systems and the manufacturing process development, are stated. The report goes on with the project results and some concluding remarks. Finally, it covers the project partners.
