Final Report - SUSTAINCHEM (Conference on Knowledge-based materials and technologies for sustainable chemistry)

Project ID: 510373
Funded under: FP6-NMP

This is the final activity report of the SUSTAINCHEM project which envisaged organising a high-level scientific conference with the central focus on how to achieve sustainable development in chemistry and chemical engineering using new materials and technologies. A key objective of this conference was to provide an environment leading to a broadly based interdisciplinary communication for countries and member states. Those looking for widening scientific interests could get professional introduction and advice from the best academic and industrial experts in this sector.

The report describes the main target of the project and its main scientific topics which were: new solvents and reaction media, reactions in these media, catalysis and biocatalysis, new analytical techniques based on developments in miniaturisation and nanotechnology.

A valuable aspect of the conference was a place for face-to-face meetings with high-level experts leading to exchange the experience and knowledge. European science experts were engaged with researchers and research groups from candidate countries already active in existing projects. The conference was advertised in several ways using public media and specialized journals and as a result there were 180 participants from 25 different countries all over the world, of which 37 were early stage researchers (graduate students).
