Final Report - ALCUEHEALTH (ALCUE Health and Quality of Life Platform)

Project ID: 510627
Funded under: FP6-INCO

Abstract

Based upon the Rio de Janeiro summit, and the need of a stronger cooperation between the two continents in the area of health, it was decided to launch a platform on health with the European Union (EU) and Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) partners to help consolidate regional education and research capacities, to innovate technologies and implement, wherever required, better standardisation in health technologies and methodologies.

The ALCUEHEALTH project was an initiative for collaboration between LAC and EU, with the aim of undertaking a series of health-related and quality-of-life activities. Its objectives were to strengthen the capacity for cooperation and develop a critical mass of knowledge within this network in relation to priority public health issues, by means of investigation projects, training programs and workshops, with experts from different countries in LAC and from Europe, with a view of transforming the knowledge generated into public health policies and practices.

The activity report provides a summary of the overall project objectives and analyses the major achievements during the reporting period through the different workshops. The main expected results were related to research and policy and included:
a) establishment of the platform on health within the Sixth Framework Programme (FP6) objectives;
b) a system of informative data mainly related to public health policies, new tools for improving quality and equity in primary safe water and sanitation and poverty-related neglected and emerging communicable diseases;
c) networking with other stakeholders;
d) dissemination of health information through ALCUEHEALTH website (see http://www.alcueh.org online);
e) implementation of new Research and development (R&D) projects.
