The European Commission, DG V, has invited interested parties to submit project proposals for subsidies in the area of health and safety at work .

The Commission has identified 'Making health and Safety at work legislation more effective' as a priority for the period 1998-2000 in the mid-term report on the Community programme concerning safety, hygiene and health at work (SAFE), 1996-2000. The following objectives are given, amongst others:

- Promoting greater involvement of labour inspectorates in encouraging the effective enforcement of Community law;
- Preparing for the evaluation of the existing legislation;
- Improving SME's awareness of health and safety at work issues and to encourage the transfer of good practices;
- Developing clear instructions contributing to the effective implementation of the legislation.
